Depuis longtemps d�j� nous avions perdu de vue la fantastique silhouette de Notre-Dame se profilant de l'autre c�t� du fleuve sur un ciel de plomb. Quai Saint-Michel, quai de la Tournelle, quai de Bercy m�me, nous �tions loin de l'avenue de l'Op�ra, des rues Drouot, Le Peletier et du centre. Nous n'allions m�me pas � Bullier, o� les vices honteux tiennent leurs assises et, s'�vadant sous le masque, tourbillonnent presque d�moniaques et cyniquement avou�s les nuits de mardi-gras, et mon compagnon se taisait. Au bord de cette Seine taciturne et p�le, sous l'enjambement de ponts de plus en plus rares, le long de ces quais plant�s de grands arbres maigres aux branchages �cart�s comme des doigts de mort une peur irraisonn�e me prenait, une peur aggrav�e par le silence inexplicable de Jakels; j'en arrivai � douter de sa pr�sence et � me croire aupr�s d'un inconnu. La main de mon compagnon avait saisi la mienne, et, quoique molle et sans force, la tenait dans un �tau qui me broyait les doigts... Cette main de puissance et de volont� me clouait les paroles dans la gorge et je sentais sous son �treinte toute vell�it� de r�volte fondre et se dissoudre en moi; nous roulions maintenant hors des fortifications, par des grandes routes bord�es de haies et de mornes devantures de marchands de vins, guinguettes de barri�res depuis longtemps closes; nous filions sous la lune qui venait enfin d'�corner une bande de nuages et semblait r�pandre sur cet �quivoque paysage de banlieue une nappe gr�sillante de mercure et de sel; � ce moment il me sembla que les roues du fiacre, cessant d'�tre fant�mes, criaient dans les pierrailles et les cailloux du chemin. C'est l�, murmurait la voix de mon compagnon, nous sommes arriv�s, nous pouvons descendre, et comme je balbutiais un timide: O� sommes-nous ? - Barri�re d'Italie, hors des fortifications, nous avons pris la route la plus longue, mais la plus s�re, nous reviendrons par une autre demain.
