Every time I ran out of reading material (frequently) I would frantically search the shelves of all the family members unti I found something unread. "Once A Warrior King" was on my sister's bookshelf, and I intentionally bipassed it (wrinkling my nose as I did so) thinking it was something pretentious and dumb that she'd picked up to impress.
One day, having truly run out of anything new to read, I had to take it reluctantly from the shelf -- because there was nothing else to read.
I have to say that I am horribly ashamed of myself for having "judged this book by it's cover." I was immediately drawn in by David Donovan's account of his tour of duty in Vietnam, and have to say that this is truly one of the best reads I have ever had -- fiction, and non-fiction, alike.
Most of the people I have met over the years will not discuss serving in Vietnam -- even to this day. I am still amazed that Mr. Donovan was able to write this very personal and honest account with such eloquence, and without prejudice, after what he saw and experienced in Vietnam.
I purchase multiple copies of this book, whenever I get the chance, to share with people I know. Not just because it's about Vietnam, but because reading "Once A Warrior King" was amazing, deeply profound, and terribly moving.
If anything good came of the ugly and horrible experience that was Vietnam... it is this book. I highly recommend it!
