Burnett is the author of Little Lord Fauntleroy, Secret Garden and the Little Princess (Shirley Temple movie version). This is a historical novel illustrating the interplay between America and England pre-auto era - where Englishmen met and married American women and vice versa (pretty much among either the moneyed or aristocratice classes). It's an adult story, romantic. Likable hero and heroine and nasty villain. It presents an idealized view of English manors and estates and connected villages, but does give you the flavor of the times. If you have read the children's stories, you will enjoy this book as well.
