I wanted to put figures in to my landscapes and found my own efforts clumsy. This is a very useful book for beginners and improvers with good basic technical advice and plenty of examples. Just what I wanted.
I loved her style, impressionistic with lots of backlighting. So good on both counts helpful but also just very good to look at.

FANTASTIC Instruction & Beautiful Book
This book is one of the best watercolor books I have seen. Not only is it filled with amazingly beautiful watercolor paintings to inspire you to learn more and paint more, but it is unique in the way the material is organized and presented, with wonderful exercises and demonstrations that simplify the complex. The emphasis of this book is to teach the student how to simplify the complex and see the tonal values to paint shadows and light that eventually become seen as the subject. It is a superb book to learn about interpretting shadow and light and how to make value sketches and interpret patterns of light and their values. The author emphasizes that "figures are patterns of light and shadow."
This book is absolutely packed with valuable information. It is also well-organized and explained, and the beauty of the illustrations is captivating. Here is an outline of Chapter 2, titled, "SIMPLIFY TO CAPTURE THE ESSENCE": Exercise: Mass the shadow shapes to find the shadow pattern. Exercise: Use the shadow pattern to paint a good likeness. Exercise: Simplify: Use negative painting. Exercise: Simplify: Use a strong light source against a dark background. Exercise: simplify: Backlighting helps unify your subject. Exercise: 9 ways to soften and lose edges. Use an underpainting to tie your subject to the background. Hart-Felt Insight: You can best show truth by painting an illusion.
Chapter 4: Value: 10 Ways to Get It Right. Use a ten degree value scale. The fool-proof way to paint shadow-side values. Identify patterns of darks and lights with value sketches. Work from black and white photos. Neutralize color to accentuate value. Squint at the subject. Create monochromatic paintings. Paint directly over a value sketch. Vary your value ratios. Place your subjects in strong light. overstate your values in watercolor. Hart-Felt insight: Value does the work.
Chapter 5 is Color Mixing and Watercolor Technique: Set the temperature. Color combinations that work. The watercolor laundry method--(basically, when you do laundry, you separate lights and darks and do the lights first etc..) Use the watercolor laundry method to create a painting. Keys to applying pigment. Demonstration: The pull-down technique. Hart-Felt Insight: Thoughts on finding the perfect medium.
Chapter 7 is People as the Main Subject. Demonstration: Create dimension at the focal point. Demonstration: Create multiple contrasts. Demonstration: use an unusual pose to add interest. Hart-Felt insight: Shedding light on the main subject.
This will give you some idea of how this book is designed and what you will learn. It absolutely packed with useful information to make you a more skillful observer and painter. The demonstrations and exercises are outstanding. I LOVE this book and think every person who wants to become a better painter could benefit highly from this book. It's GREAT!!!
