While the nations of the world are taken by surprise, the only military unit in position to react is the USS Cunningham, an experimental stealth guided missile destroyer on its first overseas deployment. And as the diplomatic furore reaches its inevitable stalemate, it is left to Commander Amanda Lee Garrett, in charge of the Cunningham, to take on the combined forces of the Argentine navy and air force in the freezing, fog-shrouded waters off the Antarctic circle while the fate of the seventh continent hangs in the balance. Although I usually prefer submarine technothrillers, this book about a stealth warship with Commander Amanda Garrett was a pleasant surprise. The plot is excellent, the battle scenes are exciting, and the sexual tension between Captain Garrett and Lieutenant Vince Arkady is palpable. The only surprise was how utterly alone they are in the fight against Argentina. Supposedly all the carrier groups are in other hot spots of the world. Where is the U.S. air force or the many submarines that prowl in the world's oceans? That was the only thing I found far-fetched. I just bought Sea Strike so I could find out what happens next between Amanda and Vince.
