I picked up this book after reading Sophie's World and fell in love immediately with the colourful characters. It's a fascinating journey through time, space and imagination seen through the eyes of a little boy and a pack of cards. Even if the reader is not a boy in search of his mother and trying to redeem his drunk father, Gaarder strikes a chord with the portrayal of little-boy-lost Hans Thomas. The parallels between Hans Thomas' journey and the lives of the cards, particularly the Ace of Hearts, and the elements of mysticism (like the Joker dwarf and gypsy) are likewise captivating. Each reading of the book provides new experiences - just like the taste of Rainbow Fizz.
