Imagine yourself a very bright, curious, thoughtful and sensitive 14, 15 or 16 year-old struggling with the usual thoughts and feelings of angst and hormones and loneliness and you stumble onto this book and identify with the character (or at least like her) and suddenly you're not the only one thinking these thoughts or dreaming these ideas. They aren't being forced on you by a teacher, but they're shared through a book. You are not alone, there are entire schools of thought written about these thoughts and feelings. For that child this book is written. So he or she can then explore what they found in its pages and see where it takes them.

Fabulous tale
An intriguing story with a very different approach to story-telling. Yet to complete so cannot tell how it develops but I have learnt a great deal about Philosophy which has been a bonus. I would thoroughly recommend it based on what I have read.

Philosophy for all ages is fun!
This is a great little book to learn about philosophy without all that dry stuff you find in dusty old books and just as dusty old libraries.
The lead character is a 14-year old girl who learns about life in some really cool ways that the kid in us will readily identify with . . . I loved reading about Socrates and Plate. I never did like Aristotle despite what the Middle Age philosophers tried to do to resurrect his ideas.
I loved how the author dealt with Spinoza and Locke and made every philosopher come alive.
Enjoy this book leisurely!

Not the same version as shown by the cover photo. I received an older version that had some writing in it. It is still a great read though.

Entertaining Timeline
Sophie's World is a well laid out history of signifigant philosophical history intertwined with a story of two girls; Sophie and Hilde who are both adolescants. The historical facts are broken up nicely by their somewhat lighthearted attitudes and lives, This is a good starting point for those who want to figure out how we (humanity) have gotten to this point in our collective understanding.
