Research over the last two decades of the 20th century has revealed a robust reciprocal relationship between depression and marital dissatisfaction, but it was only at the end of this period that researchers were able to tease out the most clinically useful and coherent patterns in the data depicting this relationship. In this volume, scholars synthesize these data, describe data analysis strategies, and present original research that crosses traditional disciplinary boundaries to include perspectives from developmental psychopathology, social and personality psychology, and clinical research and practice. The recurrent nature of depression, significant gender differences in interpersonal patterns, and the need to tailor marital therapy to account for differences among subgroups of depressed patients are among the themes explored by chapter authors. Their conclusions imply fundamental shifts in the way we frame questions about families and pathology, conduct research, and attempt to intervene therapeutically in the lives of depressed patients.
