Hundreds of books have appeared recently on how to design new Web pages and jazz up existing Web sites with graphics, sounds, and links. But effective Web sites contain much more than far-out videos, graphics, and sounds -- they also contain text that people will want to read. Writing for the Web demands a different kind of writing, one that incorporates the styles of both print and TV writing. Writing for the Web offers sound principles that writers should bear in mind as well as exercises to strengthen writing skills and eliminate bad writing habits. The principles are based on the author's firsthand experience and on the experience of organizations that rely on Web communications for their very existence.

One is always leery of a technology book that's more than a few years old, and this volume is pushing 10. However, I was very pleased to find not only solid advice that is still relevant, but also dozens of excellent online resources that have stood the test of time.
References are included in the text itself without a consolidated list of links, which would have been handy. Naturally, some of the sites no longer exist, but the majority of them do, and they represent some of the best websites on the subject. All of these sites have been around since at least 1999, some since 1995 - and that durability means a lot in this field.
The text generally follows the author's own advice, being well laid-out and easy-to-read, if a little plain. Concerns about modem speeds and graphics are mostly obsolete, while the majority of the text, offering tips for writing clearly, writing for an electronic medium, and understanding the audience, are absolutely current.
