First Published in 1892, "The Green Fairy Book" is the fourth in a series of collections of fairy tales from around the world edited by Andrew Lang, the Scottish novelist, poet and literary critic, with translations and retellings by several authors, including his wife, Leonora Blanche Alleyne. Lang and Alleyne collaborated on popular and enduring collections of fairy tales and poetry for over twenty years. Lang and Alleyne achieved great commercial success with the publication of the "The Blue Fairy Book" in 1889, the first in the series. Each book was named after a color and included compilations of the most famous and recognizable fairy tales from all over the world. The collections published by Lang and Alleyne put these memorable and universally appealing tales into single volumes and made them accessible to generations of children and parents. "The Green Fairy Book" features such a diverse collection of legends that many readers will most assuredly be familiar with, like "The Three Little Pigs" and "The Story of the Three Bears", while others readers might be experiencing for the first time. "The Green Fairy Book" is another great installment in this classic series of legends, folklore, and fairy tales. This edition is printed on premium acid-free paper.

For those not yet familiar with Andrew Lang's series the "(color of your choice) Fairy Book(s)," this is a huge compendium of folklore, fable, and fairy tales translated from many different national & ethnic traditions, both east & west. In addition to the stories, I particularly like the black & white illustrations that look like etchings in a 19th century gothic style. In addition to The Green Fairy Book, you can run a search using just about any color: I seem to remember red, yellow, blue, purple, lavendar, etc. I honestly don't know how many there are. Of course these would be ideal to read to children, but I also think many adults would enjoy these stories, which lack the "cuteness" that Hollywood gave some of them during the 20th century. Indeed, some of these tales are surprisingly dark, but I think we have a tendancy to underestimate what children are capable of comprehending when we edit out details that we think might be too disturbing.
