This is the second story of the Murray clan. Nigel's story. He has left his homeland to fight in France as a hired sword. He has done so to avoid confrontation at home with his brother Balfour as he is in love with his brother's wife. Gone for seven years he is ready to go home. During a moment of clarity (he has spent the past 7 years mindlessly drunk) he happens upon two people in the woods who are plotting a protective plan. One of the two is a woman trying to pass herself off as a knights page (a young lad) in order to hide from an enemy wishing to see her hanged for a crime she did not commit. In the heat of a small battle, her cover is found out by her enemies. Nigel to the rescue. Due to her only other ally being injured she must take his offer of honorable protection in order to stay alive and flee her enemy to clear her name. During the ensuing race to outrun her possbile captors and/or death they must face much danger. This story is straightforward with very little surprise for most of it. Although, Nigel is hiding one huge secret regarding his interest in Gisele. Along the way, they are constantly thwarted by men popping to kill her and now him. This book had an interesting twist in that the gal wishes to learn to protect herself and he teaches her to wield a sword. They free themselves from France to get back to his holding only to have his secret found out. There their story is quickly told and the hurts are brought to the fore. She leaves in order to continue to clear her name and to get away from the idea that she was used to replace a love that Nigel still holds for his sister-in-law. Read to find out if her name gets cleared and if he can find/save her again on her solo travel to leave him as much as she is travelling to clear her name. Good second book and worth a read.
