I was thrilled initially when I realized this is a twin sister (to the Kiera in Champion), thinking that her story would be as good a read. That the two meet and he falls for her and she for him would be given (as it is when romance is involved in novels), but a more suspenseful plot would have garnered a higher rating for the book. This story could have been filler or a side story in the Highland Champion novel and held up better than a complete novel on its own. A good effort - but does not hit the nail on the head. If one is only interested in romance, then this might be a good read. If one loves Howell stories no matter what, you will enjoy. If you like suspense and twists that have you intrigued, this is not the story for you. I prefer a suspense novel with romance touching or as a compliment to a story, rather than just running rampant through the book and not adding to the plot. I think this could have been a grand story were there more to it. But, it is just a man who is partially committed to marrying a lady when he meets and falls in love with his "mate/fit" (all the murray/cameron men/women believe there is one true mate - soul mate for each of them) only to be wrested with needing to untie his previous bond before making a full committment to the new found "mate". She is after her sister to find out what is going on as she has a gift of "sense" where her sister is concerned. They travel together to find the sister (he cannot leave her alone afterall she has been kidnapped once already....) and they meet some problems along the way. However, nothing is really so bad that it thrills a reader like in some of the other Highland books. Read if you enjoy Howell, romance or if you just want to complete all in the series. If you prefer plot driven books that do not rely on how many times the people mate while their lives are in peril - read something else.

Actually, the story deserves less than one star
I'd already wasted my money on this book, so I felt honor-bound to waste my time reading it. Silly me - I'll never make that mistake again. When the fiery lass and braw handsome laddie broke out of that wee, dark pit, the story somehow managed to escape alongside them. Tragically, the story was never seen again, yet the hero and heroine inexplicably were. A handful of pages into the book it becomes painfully clear that 'Highland Lover" is no more than a sub-standard regurgitation of every other Highland book Ms. Howell has written. Devoted readers will recognize the formula - a fiery noble Scottish lass meets a handsome rogue then spends the rest of the time they're on the road together (they're always travelling, as everyone knows the fiery noble lass would never put out in front of her parents) setting up opportunities to get laid al fresco. Once she's been shattered by the mythical instantaneous, post-virginity orgasm, she devotes herself to finding limply justifications for letting herself get shattered again. When readers are not being treated to further repetitions of the fiery lass's sanctimonious excuses for losing her maidenhead (How else will he know how much I love him? Men never realize they're truly in love with a scrawny highborn lass shaped like an 8-year old boy until they've spilled their seed inside that scrawny highborn lass at least 14 times while lying on a riverbank under the stars...) we get to read about the handsome rogue's deep regret for having breached the highborn lass's maidenhead. The guilt fair unmans him, although being unmanned never gets in the way of indulging in one more boinking under the stars. Eventually they get where they're going, someone's relative recognizes that the lass is getting laid as often as she can flip herself onto her back, and the priest hiding in the cupboard marries them off into the sunset. What really hurts while you're forcing yourself to get to the last page is knowing full well that you could have been reading a good book by Hannah Howell. "Highland Conqueror," like "Highland Hearts," overcomes the basic formula for Howell Highland hjighjinx with a fine blend of of truly fresh, engaging personalities and compelling action. Those two books prove that Ms. Howell can really write. Please explain to me how the same person could also produce the worse-than-pitiful "Highland Lover." Then explain why anyone would publish it...
