Ailis is a pawn in a game to marry two clans by her uncle. She is a pawn in a game to gain 3 children by her betrothed. No one really wants her, just to use her. The children are her sisters' - born out of wedlock. A shame to her uncle and he wants them gone so he forces her to marry the man who was to marry her sister before she had the kiddos. He uncle does not know what the intended groom does (who the children have for a father) and only thinks he is making a good deal to combine clans against the real enemy. The intended groom only wants Ailis for the children to use them as a pawn against the enemy who fathered the children. He even has no intent to become clans combined with the uncle, but to overtake his keep also once the marriage takes place. On a day out with the kiddos, Ailis is kiddnapped as well for it is believed she is their nurse, not their aunt. Alexander only wants the children because they are his brothers'. Once back at his keep, he finds out who Ailis is. His revenge plot grows sweeter when he finds he has a pawn of his own to use for ransom, to steal chastity from her as a tool to upset her enemy and to gain further from his plunder. He falls for her in the meantime while she is held there and she falls for him. There are dangers and twists enough to make the story more original than most of the kidnap plots. You will enjoy this book for some originality and for the way it ends. The depth of anger of the enemy forces Ailis to commit physical harm to Alexander against her will. She is held prisoner again in her own keep in order to protect the child she is carrying from her intended. She finally escapes and you will be surprised the lengths she goes to in saving her child from certain death. Great book.
