A woman searching for peace in a war torn land finds santuary in a convent. Even the convent is not safe from the latest scourge upon the land. Found and taken as plunder, rather than leaving her to brutal rape and murder, Hacon saves her. He intends to use his spoils of war, but his own mercy disallows force in taking her. This book is unusual in that they do not immediately fall into a passionate relationship. She is a healer and he allows her free reign to aid him in his travels with the Kings army while they raid and plunder. It takes several weeks - even a couple of months for her to finally determine that she will allow him to take her chastity. She freely gives it. She is of a poor clan and cannot wed to his station (she believes) even though she is a Lady and borne of good blood. Her family has a past as scoundrels and theives. She has lived a hard life and cannot see herself with a knight who must constantly fight when she favors peace so much. She is a bit of a trouble maker with her tongue and also due to the fact that few women around make her a target for a lecher. She can see danger, not only from the war, but from enemies to her saviour within the army. They make it to her home then his after the war. They intend to marry when he is called to war again. A bloody plot ensues and she believes him dead - murdered. She leaves with her father who is a thief of high order and he protects her for several months. Hacon is found alive and comes home. He leaves in search of Jennet while riding with the King's army again. They find each other, only to have danger again beset them. She has saved a man's life and he gives her back to her husband. In the ensuing raids, she is caught biting off words that endanger her husband when he is called before the King for treason. Only one thing can save the man, her. She must admit the words were hers and do so to save her man, all the while possibly forcing her own death and the death of the child she carries. The ensuing trial does not end the book with his innocence. There is more and you will have to read to find out what it is. Good book.
