The legendary American storyteller is back with another blockbuster novel featuring Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn and Sergeant Jim Chee. Former Navajo Tribal Police Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn comes out of retirement to help investigate what seems to be a trading post robbery. The simpleminded boy nailed for the crime is the cousin of an old colleague of Sergeant Jim Chee. He needs help, and Chee and his fiancee, Bernie Manuelito, decide to provide it. The key to proving the boy's innocence lies in a horrific airline disaster that occurred fifty years ago. Around the cliffs of the Grand Canyon, Chee must find the remains of one of the passengers who had handcuffed to his wrist an attache case filled with a fortune in diamonds - one of which seems to have turned up in the robbery. But with Hillerman it's never that simple. There are more people searching for the body of the long dead diamond dealer, and some of them are willing to kill to lay their hands upon the precious cache. Culminating deep in the canyon during a thunderous monsoon, it's a race to the finish to see who will survive, who will be brought to justice and who will finally unearth the Skeleton Man.

Millions of dollors worth of diamonds
This tale centers around the Grand Canyon where 50 years ago two airlplanes collided in midair, killimg all 172 passengers aboard both airplanes. One man on board has in his possession, handcuffed to his wrist, a briefcase full of large, special cut diamonds he was bringing to his fathers company, worth millions. He is also on his way home to marry his pregnant fiancee. A large special cut diamond shows up in the hands of Cowboy Dashee's cousin, who tries to pawn it for $20.00. The plot evolves around trying to prove the innocence of the cousin, who is suspected of stealing the diamon from a local shop that was robbed, and the finding of proof that will prove the identity of the daughter that was born to the dead passenger. There is a rumor that a briefcase, attached to a hand and arm were seen floating in the Colorado river shortly after the planes collided. DNA of those bones could prove the daughters identity, one way or another. Good fiction.

Beach Read Hillerman
In many respects "Skeleton Man" proved to be typical Hillerman. If you are a fan of this prolific writer this can be both good and bad.
One of the reasons I enjoy Mr. Hillerman's work is the opportunity to learn more about the Navajo and Hopi cultures and traditions. In that respect this novel does not disappoint. However, the story just seems too light and predictable. If you're looking for a quick, non-intellectual read, you'll like "Skeleton Man".
