PREDATOR is the terrifying new Dr. Kay Scarpetta novel from America's number-one-bestselling crime writer. Scarpetta, now freelancing with the National Forensic Academy in Florida, digs into a case more bizarre than any she has ever faced, one that has produced not only unusual physical evidence, but also tantalizing clues about the inner workings of an extremely cunning and criminal mind. She and her team -- Pete Marino, Benton Wesley, and her niece Lucy -- track the odd connections between several horrific crimes and the people who are the likely suspects. In Florida, Scarpetta is investigating the puzzling disappearance of four people who have been abducted from their home, leaving their car parked haphazardly in the driveway and a stove burner on low. Then Marino finds something in a nearby house that stops him cold: a woman who has complained of harassment from a citrus canker inspector has been viciously murdered in her bed. As one psychopath, safely behind bars and the subject of a classified scientific study at a Harvard-affiliated psychiatric hospital, teases Scarpetta with tips that could be fact--or fantasy--the number of killers on the loose seems to multiply. Are these events related or merely random? And what can the study of one man's brain tell them about the methods of a psychopath still lurking in the shadows? PREDATOR demonstrates once more that, with her extraordinary ability to entertain and enthrall, Patricia Cornwell has few peers.

Very good book, kept me interested. I have read others by Cornwall that I liked better but still an excellent read for all mystery lovers.

I adore Patricia Cornwell novels, particularly the Scarpetta series, so I was anxious to read this. I now hope she returns to the style of writing I have come to admire so much. By the end of this book I was totally confused! I found it heavy-going and was tempted more than once to give up reading it. However I stuck with it to the bitter end. I think the basic idea was excellent, but because of its intricacies, would have benefitted from more clarity from the reader's point of view. She's usually so "clear-cut". Perhaps her scalpel needs sharpening.

A Different Kind of Scarpetta Suspense
This latest Scarpetta novel is quite something. The literacy and narrative style takes a different shape. It has since The Last Precinct, which makes the novel a little less enjoyable and a little more confusing for the regular Scarpetta fan, such as myself. The story itself is excellent, just like any of Patricia Cornwell's novels. The reader is caught up in a web of suspense from beginning to end. The only problem is, there isn't really an ending.
