I believe Mary Austin is a most undervalued writer. Her characters are real, as are the settings. A lot has been written about the history of California, but this book offers readers the chance to understand that history on a personal, fundamental level. Much better than the clever and enjoyable, but shallow, entertainment written about CA by Twain and Harte.
