I'm a Mary Austin fan. She should be much more well known, especially among readers interested in the history and ecology of the West, or the progress of women's rights, or the encounter of indigenous people of North America with European/American culture. Mary Austin's observations, descriptions, and conclusions are excellent. I heartily recommend The Land of Journey's Ending to anyone who has an interest in the geography and history of the Southwest, the experience of "Indians" and their relationships with each other, the Spanish, the Catholic church, and American explorers and settlers.
