A lasting tribute to the USS Enterprise, this heavily illustrated, new edition tells the classic tale of the carrier that contributed more than any other warship to the naval victory in the Pacific. The original book, published in 1962, has remained one of the most celebrated World War II stories for more than four decades. The Big E participated in nearly every major engagement of the war against Japan and earned a total of twenty battle stars. The Halsey-Doolittle Raid; the Battles of Midway, Santa Cruz, Guadalcanal, the Philippine Sea, and Leyte Gulf; and the invasions of Iwo Jima and Okinawa are all faithfully recorded from the viewpoint of the men who served her so well. This superb study of a great ship, her crew, and the action they saw has been called one of the finest pieces of naval writing to emerge from the war. Author Edward Stafford mined genuine nuggets from the mountain of research and lengthy interviews he conducted to write this book. He answers questions such as: What was it like to be inside the cockpit of a Dauntless dive bomber as it bored in on its target or what kind effort was required to unstick the ship's huge rudder when it was damaged by a bomb? Literate and scholarly as well as highly dramatic, the book will appeal to historians and the general public alike.

Fine- No Dust Jacket Present. 8vo-over 7¾"-9¾" tall. 585pages, illustrated, with an Introduction by Paul Stillwell, Foreword by Admiral Arthur W. Ranford."The Big E is the heroic saga of the greatest, and best-loved fighting ship in history. Seven times during World War II the Japanese claimed to have sent this veteran carrier to the bottom-she escaped destruction so narrowly and so often that she was known in the fleet as the 'Galloping Ghost'. The Big E was largely responsible for turning the tide at Midway; she supported and defended the Marines on Guadalcanal, took part in the first attacks on the dreaded Japanese fortress of Truck, and more. She was officially credited with downing 911 enemy planes, sinking 71 ships and damaging almost 200 others." FINE-HARDCOVER.

This is another great book by Stafford. It tells the story of WWII through the eyes of the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise. This book is as riveting as his other books, Little Ship, Big War and Subchaser . All three of these books do a great job of telling what it was like to serve during WWII on a US Navy ship from small to large and how the war was seen by a person on board rather than an overall history of the war.

Courageous Men of the Big E
This is a detailed account of the Big E's battles and of her courageous sailors. This is the most decorated ship in the US Navy, and it pursued the Japanese fleet right to the doorstep of Japan. The details of the Big E's battles are made personal because the author names the sailors and aviators involved in the operations. This is the best account of the Big E's history that I have ever read.
