Lawrence Osborne loves wine and (most ) of the people who grow it and make it. He admits that he's not an expert or true connoisseur but puts himself in situations that seem to prove no one is an expert when it comes to the subjective matter of taste. A kindred spirit of those who think wine production should not be run by the accountants, Osborne hops around California to France and Italy meeting growers and sampling tasty and interesting wines while offering some commentary on how tastes evolve when there are critics to please and markets to be won. We meet some wacky characters, but Osborne doesn't over-editorialize, letting the people he meets explain their philosophy, ambitions or lack of integrity in their own words. This is a fascinating read and it's written with relish, helping to reinforce the old belief that a simple life and simple things make people happy and that our connection to the land is important. When we begin living for ratings alone, prestige or other people's notions of taste then we have truly lost touch. Diversity is important, most especially in the food and drink we consume. This is a nice companion piece to Jonathan Nossiter's film Mondovino, exploring some of the same themes and generally letting the viewer form his or her own conclusions. Forget the Parker Buyers' Guide, get this book.
