Heinz Guderian - master of the Blitzkrieg and father of modern tank warfare - commanded the German XIX Army Corps as it rampaged across Poland in 1939. Personally leading the devastating attack which traversed the Ardennes Forest and broke through French lines, he was at the forefront of the race to the Channel coast. Only Hitler's personal command to halt prevented Guderian's tanks and troops turning Dunkirk into an Allied bloodbath. Later commanding Panzergruppe 2 in Operation Barbarossa, Guderian's armoured spearhead took Smolensk after fierce fighting and was poised to launch the final assault on Moscow when he was ordered south to Kiev. In the battle that followed, he helped encircle and capture over 600,000 Soviet troops after days of combat in the most terrible conditions. Panzer Leader is a searing firsthand account of the most effective fighting force in modern history by the man who commanded it.

I felt that this book was a real find...Any person with a serious collection of this era would appreciate this book. It is well translated and documents the actual information that present day authors just re-write.

Excellent book
Guderian was an aristocrat, military professional and innovator (panzer development), as well as a brave and extraordinary leader. That he additionally wrote well just isn't fair! Although of course concentrating on panzers, this book is also a good glimpse of WWII from the German point of view. Among much else, Guderian's battles with Hitler are fascinating. Not a perfect book (but it might have been with better editing), but surely worth five stars.

Read the book
An interesting book from a German point of view on the war. I found the added personal aspects of his life and his meetings with Hitler added value to the reading.

In the midst of history
An opportunity to accompany one of the major players during WWII. Details Guderian's struggles to help create and deploy the Panzer Force despite considerable opposition from higher up the chain of command. A good study not only of armored warfare, but, most likely, of whatever opposition the next revolutionary development will face.

Panzer Leader
"Panzer Leader" is a memoir of German General Heinz Guderian's military career before and during the Second World War. His work, based on his personal experiences as a tank general and Chief of the Army General Staff, reveals intricate descriptions and analyses of German military actions as well as his biases and interpretations. While the book's main focus is the development and use of German tanks in World War II, the book also describes Guderian's relationships with Adolf Hitler and other leading personalities of the Third Reich. This book offers fascinating insights into the major leaders of Nazi Germany and the operations of the German army during World War II. This is a long and detailed book, but is very much worth reading for one who desires to learn more about World War II. Highly recommended.
