After viewing HBO'S, "The Pacific," I decided to read the four books it was based on.
This is E. Sledge's story of his experience in the Pacific theater. It states that he wrote this for his family and never intended it to be published, so I expect that it is true to his memory and not embellished.
Thousands of American lives were sacrificed and millions of lives were changed during WWII. The battles fought on Peleliu and Okinawa changed history. E.B. Sledge wrote about his experiences fighting these battles from the standpoint of an enlisted Marine. He brings forth the horrors and waste of war, even though necessary to preserve a way of life. If you ever thought war was glorious, this book will change your opinion. A "must read" for those who want a better understanding of what the "Greatest Generation" did for America.

THE MOST DESCRIPTIVE account of on the ground combat in the Pacific Theater that I have ever read. I really don't know how survivors, like Sledge made it through and kept their sanity. They truly are "THE GREATEST GENERATION".
Outstanding and informative read. Highly recommend it. 5 stars.
