The "Bloods" must be recognised
The Southern band of the "People" are now called the Elk-dog band because of the advent of the horse, which has been brought to the tribe by the Spanish soldier, Juan Garcia, who is now called "Heads off" by the people. With the coming of the horse, called Elk-dogs by the people, other things have happened. On the plus side is the fact that hunting the buffalo has not only become easier, but many more buffalo are killed, making their lives easier. On the negative side, it has given the young warriors much new freedom of time. This leads to a new society in the band called the "Bloods". They paint red stripes on their faces and they want to go to war with their enemy the "Head-Splitters" They rebel against authority when told no, and they leave the main band, making the main band weak. This is the story of what happens to the weakened main band, and to the "Blood Society".
