This is the story of Eagle, the son of the chief heads-off, and his incounter with the Trickster, the legendary supernatural figure of the tribes. He is called by many different names, but by the "people" he is called the Old Man of the Shadows. Eagle is on a buffalo hunt. He gets in the wrong place at the wrong time when his horse bolts, and he and his horse are pushed over a cliff by a stampeded herd of buffalo. He survives the fall, but breaks a leg. Eagle is helped by an old man with long hair, a big nose, and very wrinkled--the very description of the trickster. Because of his broken leg, Eagle must depend upon the old man for all his needs. There is a "real" bear, a mountain lion, an eagle, and other animals involved in the story. Are all these encounters the work of the old man, or are they real? Is this the Trickster or just an old man? You must decide.
