I was in my late teens when I first read this book, shortly after it was released. It remains one of my all time favourite novels. Set during the second world war, it tells the story of two groups of Germans, one regular army, the other SS, stationed at a keep high in the Romanian mountains and what happens to them over the space of about a fortnight. The story plays with the elements of familiar vampire stories and comes out with something fresh and new. Mr Wilson tells a cracking tale and tells it superbly well. Riveting stuff, highly recommended.

A romance novel that will surprise you
It doesn't start out that way, as a romance novel. It starts out as a horror/war/Nazi against the world kind of book. But it blossoms. It shifts, like the shadows in the long forgotten Keep. It has you cheering by the end. Read it. You will not be disappointed.
