As the USA in the 1950s moved to the dangerous right, Mme. Mitford answered the CP call to try to save a black man unjustly condemned in the segregated South. Although Mitford and other white ladies did not save him, they did rise awareness among not so friendly white, including William Faulkner, to sign a petition to the spare the young black man. In a way, it goes to show you how grit and determination can win over people to act.
