Roberta Rohbeson begins her book in 1971, in what starts out as a drug-fueled teenage rant that gradually fades into the story of two cross-country trips she made with her father five years earlier -- a story she has kept to herself since she was found wandering the desert covered with blood. In a word, Cruddy is amazing. What I thought was going to be yet another story of a girl's coming of age turns out to be a fascinating roller coaster ride. Lynda Barry writes so convincingly that you wonder if she hasn't experience some of the things in her novel herself. The story centers around Roberta Robheson,a not so attractive girl, scarred and missing part of a finger. She lives in a run down house with a bratty little sister and a mother who hates her and leaves them on their own as she goes away with a man. Roberta befriends Vicky Talluso, a somewhat loose girl with a missing eyebrow that is scabbed over from her persistent scratching of it. During a course of a couple of days, high on every drug possible, Roberta meets the Turtle, the Great Wesley and and Vicky's somewhat ill brother. As they hang around town looking for places to get high, Roberta recounts her strange, frightening and bizarre childhood spent on the road with her murderous father in search of three suitcases full of money. Her father abuses her, kills people at random and threatens to kill her whenever he's in a foul mood. Disappointed with the fact that Roberta is a girl he calls her Clyde instead. Why Roberta is scarred, how she looses a part of her finger and what happens when she and her father stay at a motel in the middle of the Nevada desert is all a part of the roller coaster ride that I won't ruin.
