Seller's Description:
New York. 1999. Simon & Schuster. 1st Edition. Very Good in Dustjacket. 0684829746. 305 pages. hardcover. Signed by the Author. keywords: Literature America Women. FROM THE PUBLISHER-On a September night in 1971, a few days after getting busted for dropping acid, a sixteen-year-old curls up in the corner of her ratty bedroom and begins to write. Now the truth can finally be revealed about the mysterious day long ago when the authorities found a child, calmly walking in the boiling desert, covered with blood. The girl is Roberta Rohbeson, and her rant against a world bounded by 'the cruddy top bedroom of a cruddy rental house on a very cruddy mud road' soon becomes a detailed account of another story, one that she has kept silent since she was eleven. Darkly funny and resonant with humanity, Cruddy, masterfully intertwines Roberta's stories-part Easy Rider and part bipolar Wizard of Oz. These stories, the backbone of Roberta's short life, include a one-way trip across America fueled by revenge and greed and a vivid cast of characters, starring Roberta's dangerous father, the owners of the Knocking Hammer Bar-cum-slaughterhouse, and runaway adolescents. With a teenager's eye for freakish detail and a nervous ability to make the most horrible scenes seem hilarious, Cruddy is a stunning achievement. inventory #26894.
In a word, Cruddy is amazing. What I thought was going to be yet another story of a girl's coming of age turns out to be a fascinating roller coaster ride. Lynda Barry writes so convincingly that you wonder if she hasn't experience some of the things in her novel herself. The story centers around Roberta Robheson,a not so attractive girl, scarred and missing part of a finger. She lives in a run down house with a bratty little sister and a mother who hates her and leaves them on their own as she goes away with a man. Roberta befriends Vicky Talluso, a somewhat loose girl with a missing eyebrow that is scabbed over from her persistent scratching of it. During a course of a couple of days, high on every drug possible, Roberta meets the Turtle, the Great Wesley and and Vicky's somewhat ill brother. As they hang around town looking for places to get high, Roberta recounts her strange, frightening and bizarre childhood spent on the road with her murderous father in search of three suitcases full of money. Her father abuses her, kills people at random and threatens to kill her whenever he's in a foul mood. Disappointed with the fact that Roberta is a girl he calls her Clyde instead. Why Roberta is scarred, how she looses a part of her finger and what happens when she and her father stay at a motel in the middle of the Nevada desert is all a part of the roller coaster ride that I won't ruin.
