"Berry richly evokes Port William's farmlands and hamlets, and his characters are fiercely individual, yet mutually protective in everything they do. . . . His sentences are exquisitely constructed, suggesting the cyclic rhythms of his agrarian world".--New York Times Book Review.

The title story of this collection holds your attention while addressing current issues affecting us all: who owns our bodies and the way we conduct our lives? Is the basis for order in our societies and lives based on the needs of human beings, or some faceless system? As always, Berry's work brings to our consciousness the difference between life as it can be, and what we've sacrificed to the gods of progress and convenience.

Back to Port William
Having read a number of the Port William novels before it was good to read these stories and return to this place and to these people again. The stories speak to a time and place when life was just moving into our present world and they share old wisdom that all of us need to hear and contemplate. They are stories in which love is given in ways which will make one think.
