I normally love Georgette Heyer, for her humor, historical accuracy, fun plots, endearing characters, bubbly style. But I have to say that Penhallow was not only a disappointment from start to finish, it was downright depressing. I could even say, appalling. One of the rare novels I couldn't bring myself to give even to a library sale, but tossed. Emotional cruelty abounds, not a likeable character among them, they're all either mean or weak, and the resolution of the story is weak as well. Thoroughly unsatisfying.
