My first 5 star review of an Alexander book. So well done he even borrowed from it a little later. Pacing is excellent, barely a moment to sit, always taking a new turn, always surprising. Obviously, the man was on a roll-- this book spiraling out of his success with his still best known work: The Prydain Chronicles. By far the best book I have read by this writer yet: always keeping me coming back to it with nothing but anticipation and just wondering what little path it was going to whisk away on in the next eventful 10-plus-page mini-chapter. Only criticism being the ending wrapping up, again, a little too snappy-- and-- issue with the cover illustration by the usually spot-on C.F. Payne. I've met this guy, and he's basically one of the top 3 commercial illustrators on the planet... but what is this dreck? Perhaps Dutton asked him to make the book have a younger appeal or something but the illustration steals one of the twist moments that this book otherwise abounds with-- plus-- it's not even accurate. Both characters have different descriptions than depicted... and simple things like age and hair color. This book deserves work the early 80s run of Prydain and Westmark series were given by, of all publishers: Dell. These illustrations have even survived reissuing as recent as 1997. Anyway, the book...
If you've read the hits and you haven't gotten to this one then you're in luck///// go get one now! And don't be put off by the juvenile quality of the current cover illustration. Less of Alexander's excellent wordplay and pearl necklaces of wisdom but totally loaded for adventure, entertainment and unexpectedness and a totally masterfully told story with great devices. His typewriter must've also been Lelio's (see the book for explanation).
