This is the first full-length account of the CIA's coup d'etat in Iran in 1953--a covert operation whose consequences are still with us today. Written by a noted New York Times journalist, this book is based on documents about the coup (including some lengthy internal CIA reports) that have now been declassified. Stephen Kinzer's compelling narrative is at once a vital piece of history, a cautionary tale, and a real-life espionage thriller.

In All the Shah's Men Stephen Kinzer tells a story that should be widely known. He explains the responsibility of British Imperialists and the CIA in the tragic events that transformed Iran from a viable democracy to a repressive theocracy. He lays the evidence of real historical documents before us and gives the opinions of a variety of statesmen and historians so that readers can make up their own minds. This fast-paced, skillfully written book reads like an exciting mystery story.

Must read to understand current events
This book tells the story of why we are where we are with Iran and other Middle East countries. It should make every US citizen angry to read how self determination by the people of Iran was sacrificed to corporate greed and US/UK governmental complicity via colonialism. It has changed my world view and should be a must read for anyone interested in/troubled by the current US status in the world. I actually had to stop reading it several times, I was so angry about Kermit Roosevelt's involvement and by association, the US involvement in the downfall of a legitimately elected government . We continue to experience the pain of this terrible mistake.

Know what you didn't know
A must read to understand what is happening, and why some countries/characters in the world behave/perform the way they do. The auther took an excellent neutral - almost a research approach - to identify and analyze the root cause and reasons for happenings taking place recently (as well as in the recent past) and who those are interrelated events and rational, even to past 50 years observations. Very easy and simple flow way of narrating history. Excellent opportunity. Once you read this book, you will understand why persidents and leaders of different countries (including our own), can't understand the conflict and baffled that they can't find a solution to a problem. This book is a priceless and invaluable to anyone who wishs to understand. An eye opener to events around us, and a lesson for any adminstration, as well as, a potential step to real solutions - to those who are honest and want to solve a problem..
