In Fall, 1956, I was in the Western Pacific as a part of the 7th Fleet. We were in a constant news vacuum, no television of course, and no radio on the giant mass of metal that made up the USS Essex. Each department was given a single mimeographed page daily telling us what we were wanted to know. There was great excitement when we heard of the British-French-Israeli invasion of Egypt. The rumor mill ground out that we were headed to the Med. But since the other two carriers in the Fleet were temporarily out of business, we had to guard the seas by ourselves and couldn't be spared.
It's taken me more than half a century to find a book that would tell me what went on. From start to finish, we find British ineptitude on every page. Great effort was placed on burning papers --- one cabinet secretary was sent back to Paris to retrieve a page yet spared from the fire---and Britain was ashamed of its self for doing what she was still planning.
World opinion was unanimous against what Britain, France and Israel was doing. When the fighting came, command was no better.
Kyle's history is a primer on what not-to-do in both political and military adventures. For anyone who lived in those days, Suez will fill and important gap in our knowledge of a war we almost got into, and a political system to which we are still tied.
