There is no shortage of books on leadership. Most are escapist and promise to teach you the leadership secrets so that you can be the next Napoleon, or Jack Welch, or Ivan the Terrible.
Sayles's book is simply about how to achieve, acquire, maintain, use, or work with leadership within real organisations. In other words, the organisation where you go to work at everyday. Not Napoleon's army, not the GE executive board, etc. This is the world where you have bosses, you have peers, you have people under you, and the whole interaction between all of them is messy, glacial, political, and movable only by the fulcrum of leadership.
The books contains recommendations based on the author's long research in organisations. I found this book very practical and realistic. For real people like you and me.
