This was the first book on art I ever read - when I was 16 and still at school. It opened my eyes to art of all periods: "modern" in the title means from the Eighteenth Century onwards! Canaday - whose own sympathies were very much with more tradional kinds of art - deals fairly with art of all the various schools of his chosen period, neo-classsicism, romanticism, impressionism and so forth. His only real blind spot is Victorian acadedmic art; but the rehabilitation of nineteenth-century art had not started when Canaday was writing this. Advances in printing technology mean that the book has a rather old-fashioned appearance, with most of the illustrations in black and white. But the text is as good as it was when Canaday wrote it in 1959. Cheap reading copies are easily available from alibris, and are worth their weight in gold. A brilliant introduction to the visual arts.
