As an undergraduate student in the late 1980s, my very first art book for academic endeavors had been this text, which had been utilized for introductory art appreciation. Twenty years later, with an M.A. in art history, and now teaching humanities courses myself (at the collegiate level, no less), I have never found a book to be its equal, in terms of being student-friendly for cohesion, clarity, and comprehensiveness. Whereas nothing can top the older editions of H.W. Janson's "History of Art" for those individuals seriously considering study of the fine arts (painting, sculpture, drawing, architecture), for persons looking for an easy-to-follow, well-illustrated, nicely organized text, hands down, this book simply can't be topped.
In my role as faculty, I am provided free copies of textbooks to assess for class use--and newer does not automatically equate with improved. Unfortunately, the Canaday text is presently out of print, although I strongly recommend to my students to hunt down copies of it for their personal enjoyment and edification. In large measure, I have retained what I had learned some two decades ago because the structure, ease, and diversity of the Janson-Canaday books are so impressive.
(Word to the wise: the newer Janson books, edited by his son, are nowhere near as good as the older versions; the son's editions, for example, wholly remove Islamic-inspired art--which is breathtakingly beautiful in all its arabesque. Do yourself a favor by locating and purchasing the older editions; mine had been the fifth, and incomparably wonderful, informative text.)
