Lumber was Clelland's Business
To call this book a "western" is a misnomer, except in the fact it is set in the west--in California; San Francisco is where Dabney Clelland ran his many enterprises early in 1851. His lastest scheme was to set up a lumber mill at Salmon Bay, so he ordered equipment from back east which had to be sent "around the Horn". When it arrives, the city of San Francisco is on fire, and Bruce Shafter the man sent with the machinery lends a hand. Of course looters are every where and they seem to know where the most valuable items were and ramsacked what was left. A girl named Barbara is dragged to safety by Shafter, and she is wearing a valuable ring which the looters seem to know all about.....This is a thrilling novel about the building of the west by the intrepid individuals who accomplished it. Great Book!
