If the blatant cover art didn't make it clear, Frosh, Vol. 4 is all about the party. Part of a Universal Canada series, the album gathers up current hits, classic nuggets, and a few ringers that can only be described as party music for an entertaining set tailor-made for your next sorority soirée or residence hall throwdown. Vol. 4 might not hit be as immediate as its predecessors -- despite its hit single status, 3 Doors Down's "Kryptonite" is a little too brooding to be a successful opener. But once DMX ("Party Up") and Run D.M.C. (the perennially great "It's Tricky") arrive, Frosh picks up considerable steam. The mid-album reggae/dancehall set is a bit problematic if you're not a fan of the music, but pretty soon the Notorious B.I.G. is rhyming ménage-a-trois with "sex in expensive cars." Of course, there's another stopper in the form of "Who Let the Dogs Out," which is likely to get you punched. But with a click of the Skip button, your party will be back on track. Frosh, Vol. 4's second half features Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock's classic "It Takes Two," the geeky NC-17 new wave of Bloodhound Gang's "Bad Touch," and Afroman's "Because I Got High," which is sure to perk the ears of your patchouli friend down the hall. Vol. 4 of Frosh features some of the most overplayed party songs of the past 25 years. But with some minor editing, it will bravely add your own shindig to that glorious tradition. ~ Johnny Loftus, Rovi
