Rebound's Alterno-Daze: Origin of the Species -- 2000 BC To ? attempts to offer a brief summary of underground, proto-punk, punk and new wave staples -- sort of a punk primer to kids turned onto alternative music through Nirvana or Green Day. Since it's a budget priced compilation, it shouldn't be surprising that it clocks in at 12 tracks (ten on cassette) and occasionally gets it wrong -- the Tubes may have been strange but they weren't punk, Marianne Faithfull's "Broken English" is powerful but doesn't quite have the right vibe, the Troggs might have forecast punk with "Wild Thing" but it's truly not a punk song and, yes, David Bowie was a major influence on punk, but "Love You Till Tuesday" was recorded prior to his groundbreaking work. What is a surprise, is that the rest of the album is pretty good, indeed. Certainly, a budget line collection could never provide a definitive portrait of punk and New Wave, but this has more than its fair share of great songs, including "Is She Really Going Out with Him?," "Pulling Mussels (From the Shell)," "Whip It," "Sheena is a Punk Rocker," "One Step Beyond," "Mirror in the Bathroom," "I'm Waiting for the Man" and "Going Underground."
