The first volume has three piano solos from Sammy Price, four numbers from a heated septet date with the great soprano Sidney Bechet and trumpeter Hot Lips Page, and 15 selections by various quintets featuring Mezzrow and Bechet. On five instances, Mezzrow is heard years later telling the story behind certain performances. There is a certain sameness to much of the material, but some selections stand out, particularly "Evil Gal Blues" (featuring a vocal by Coot Grant), a two-part "The Blues and Freud," "Ole Miss," "Blues of the Roaring Twenties," "The Sheik of Araby" and the romping "Perdido Street Stomp." ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi
