Ultimate dance music middlemen Shadow Recordings continue their Shadow Mix series, highlighting the catalog of a chosen dance label as mixed by a high-profile DJ. This mix features Disko B head Richard Hinge mixing almost two dozen tracks from his own company. While most label compilations lack the diversity usually required to create a compelling mix, the techno-centric electro that is Disko B's specialty builds from a slow simmer to a scalding burn with no need for outside track assistance. That is not to say there are not a few occasions when the requirement to fit in a record overrules the necessity of a smooth mix, but with the stark European electro of I-F and Artist Unknown leading to the hard dirty techno of Jay Denham and Richard Bartz, one can forgive a couple of downshifting blends. Disko B workhorse Abe Duque makes a number of welcome appearances in his Kirlian guise, while the unsmiling remake of the Stooges classic "I Wanna Be Your Dog" by mystery duo Dakar & Grinser is worth the price of admission alone. More serious and calculating than the current rush of German retro labels, such as International Deejay Gigolo (founded by former Disko B activist Hell), this mix recalls a not so distant time when electro and techno were serious undertakings by men with lots of electronic boxes and uncharacteristic penchants for wiggling their asses. ~ Joshua Glazer, Rovi
