DJ Dan might be the last great American rave DJ, not afraid of coming on too strong with the massive funky beats that risk sounding ridiculous when not blasting out of a 12-foot-tall stack of speakers. DJ Dan might be the last great American rave DJ, not afraid of coming on too strong with the massive funky beats that risk sounding ridiculous when not blasting out of a 12-foot-tall stack of speakers. On his sixth mix CD in as many years, the L.A. legend delivers another dose of swinging grooves that go off with house funk and techno velocity. And like his other CDs, Dan grabs a simple party truism and runs with it. On Roundtrip, that chosen concept is, of course, travel, with plane, train, and automobile samples popping up sporadically within the mix. In all honesty, Roundtrip doesn't sound terribly different from Dan's first mix CD, but over-the-top tracks like Phil Kieran's "Vitalian House," with its "housey-housey-house-house-house nation!" chorus, will still make you bump in your seat. Never mind Laurent Wolf's ludicrous overuse of the classic "fresh" scratch on "Pump It Up," one of Wolf's four tracks to appear on these two discs. So while the purveyors of cool might have deemed Dan's style passé, it's hard to argue with the wicked breakbeat that opens Jon H. & Raskal's "Afro's Revenge" or the filthy slap bass note that drives the R-rated "Rub on Your Titties" by Player. It turns out that, despite the immense turnover on these ravetastic tracks, some loops are, in fact, timeless. ~ Joshua Glazer, Rovi
