Collections of Colonies of Bees offer up post-rock headphone music on Customer, released by Polyvinyl Records. All the tracks on the album are entitled "Fun" -- except for the last, which is called "Funeral." Collections of Colonies of Bees conjure up a mixture of electronic and live tracks, with manipulations wandering in and out of the left and right speakers and blips and bleeps showcasing the occasional guitar weavings. Calling up elements of Books and Directions in Music, Collections do not always commit to the tone focus of the electronic sounds they provide. When the group follows a theme, though, the middle of Customer and the "Fun" seem to be where the group members are most successful in honing their interesting melodic playing. One could surmise that Collections of Colonies of Bees had fun tinkering with this music while making it, but the listener may have a harder time enjoying or joining in the fun with Customer. ~ Francis Arres, Rovi
