This is the second volume of holiday favorites issued by NPR to feature Marian McPartland and her friends, featuring music recorded by she and her guests during the production of her long-running NPR radio series. The veteran pianist provides accompaniment or performs solo on about half of the CD's 20 tracks, including a buoyant duet with Christian McBride on "Silver Bells," a heartfelt vocal by Eden Atwood on "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" that brings out the true bittersweet nature of the song, as well as two versions of "Hark the Herald Angels Sing" (a richly textured version with singer Nnenna Freelon and a mellow duet with guitarist Jackie King). Her solo take of "A Child Is Born" features an elaborate improvised introduction, while the inventive chords chosen for "What Child Is This" can't possibly be mistaken for any other pianist.McPartland's guest solo pianists definitely threaten to steal the show. Bill Cunliffe takes a playful uptempo approach to "God Rest Ye, Merry Gentlemen," folding in Latin rhythms with a twist of post-bop. Makoto Ozone is even more dazzling with his humorous but brisk treatment of "Rudoph the Red-Nosed Reindeer." "Little Drummer Boy" is a song that can get on one's nerves if played with little imagination; fortunately, David Hazeltine's interesting chord substitutions bring new life to this old chestnut. Bill Charlap, widely heralded as one of the most promising pianists of his generation, adds to the timeless lyricism of "The First Noel" with his well-conceived interpretation. Randy Weston's miniature original "The Icicle Song" suggests childhood taunting, though it quickly evolves into a rather complex theme. Proceeds from the sale of this highly recommended release support the production of Marian McPartland's Piano Jazz and NPR. ~ Ken Dryden, Rovi
