This disc is as strong -- or maybe stronger -- than Vol. 1, and would command a slightly higher rating, if not for the use of some cover versions of the tracks listed, and a few glaring mistakes in the tracks and credits which are sure to disappoint some purchasers. This disc is as strong -- or maybe stronger -- than Vol. 1, and would command a slightly higher rating, if not for the use of some cover versions of the tracks listed, and a few glaring mistakes in the tracks and credits which are sure to disappoint some purchasers. The Three Stooges' theme music is promising enough, but is done just sloppily enough to remind any connoisseur that it isn't the original. By the same token, the second-season Outer Limits title music by Harry Lubin is here, not the listed first season music credited to Dominic Frontiere. And the re-recording of The Avengers title music (erroneously credited to Johnny Dankworth, who wrote the original theme from the show's first three British seasons, but not the familiar Diana Rigg-era title music used here, which was written by Laurie Johnson) sounds wimpy. On the other hand, it is pretty cool to hear the Courageous Cat & Minute Mouse title music, George of the Jungle, Jonny Quest, Underdog, Gidget, Car 54, Where Are You?, My Mother the Car, and the main title themes for The Virginian, Wagon Train, and Have Gun Will Travel, all in pretty good sound. There are 65 television themes here, and apart from the little mistakes, they're almost all interesting. Among the strangest material here is the music from some of television's failures, such as It's About Time (one of the longest theme songs ever done for TV) and The Green Hornet. Also pleasing is the fact that the producers have used opening and closing theme versions of this material grafted together, so we hear the fullest possible versions of the themes from Ben Casey (written by no less a name than David Raksin, of Laura fame). ~ Bruce Eder, Rovi
