The late '60s and early '70s were a creatively fertile time for Judy Collins, as she matured from a noted folk singer into a vocalist who interpreted a wide variety of songs with intelligence, imagination, and subtle passion. On 1966's In My Life, Collins embraced an artful sound, with arranger Joshua Rifkin giving the songs elegant, thoughtful accompaniment as she performed covers by the Beatles, Bob Dylan, Donovan, and the then-little-known Leonard Cohen. 1967's Wildflowers followed in a similar vein, featuring several Cohen compositions, a French chanson from Jacques Brel, and Collins' version of Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now" that became a hit single. 1970's Whales & Nightingales featured several audacious musical experiments, including Collins' striking a cappella interpretation of "Amazing Grace" and "Farewell to Tarwathie," in which her vocals were accompanied by the songs of humpback whales. In My Life/ Wildflowers/ Whales & Nightingales is a box set from the British Beat Goes On label that features these three album in newly remastered form, bringing together three of the most important works in the Collins catalog. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi
