Expanding on the instrumental foundation the band laid with their first album, Pacific Coast Rambler retains the warmth and intimacy of that record with a more varied sonic arsenal. In addition to the increased prominence of Mike "Razz" Russell's fiddle playing, the dulcimer, congas, a viola, an organ, and an accordion paint the Creek Dippers' previously stark sound with a few more colors. Naturally, after incorporating all those extra instruments into the lineup, the songs have taken on a different character. While the songs on the Original Harmony Ridge Creek Dippers album are beautiful, if somewhat mournful in tone, and immediately catchy, Pacific Coast Rambler is all air and light -- it's unabashedly a folk record and the songs aren't as striking. While the album may be a great soundtrack for tending an organic garden or lazing on the porch with a glass of lemonade, it's just not as memorable or poignant as the Creek Dippers' debut.
