For her first disc of original material since 2000's scattershot Fearless, popular CCM artist Crystal Lewis has filtered out the successful elements from that collection and brought them into focus for See. Her first smart decision was to hand over all production tasks to Jyro Xhan, who worked on Fearless along with 2002's all-hymns Holy, Holy, Holy. His airy arrangements lift Lewis' appealing voice and perfectly embrace each song's rhythm and melody. Another asset was Lewis writing or co-writing eight of the ten tracks, which contributes to the consistency of the album. Beginning with the soulful groove of "So Happy," Lewis sets a relaxed yet jubilant tone that is carried throughout the disc. Moving away from the nearly fatal hip-hop feel of Fearless, Lewis lets her pop songs fly as they should, with a breezy lightness that makes mid-tempo gems like "Think About It" and "Beautiful Saviour" more resilient and refreshing. Even the crunchy guitar on "Just Sing" enhances the song's funky rock feel without weighing down Lewis' catchy melody. However, the routine ballad of "Never Alone" and Xhan's more urban "YTT" allow the disc to droop a bit in the middle, but the bubbly single "Learn to Fly" and the wistful finale "My Emmanuel" end the disc beautifully. Throughout See, Lewis' voice sounds richer and more expressive than it has before, she sings these praises with a fresh burst of energy that comes along when fully committed to the message of these songs. Back on track and fully in charge, Crystal Lewis invites everyone to fully See and appreciate her musical gifts once again. ~ Aaron Latham, Rovi
