After upheavals that have been well-chronicled elsewhere, the sibling quintet The 5 Browns returned to the recording arena with a holiday album in 2019, followed by this somewhat more personal release. The group states: "The Little Tin Box represents a rediscovery of childhood through music, a reclaiming of its sweetness and beauty, and finding greater meaning in the light by having survived the dark." Some of the pieces involved were indeed played by the various Browns during childhood, but aside from these aspects, The Little Tin Box mostly offers a return to the kind of program that took The 5 Browns to the top of the classical charts. Five-piano arrangements are interspersed with solos and pieces for smaller groups, and the siblings continue to impress with their intricate ensemble work. If you're new to classical music's answer to The Osmonds, listen to their Beethoven Symphony No. 5 in C minor, Op. 67, first movement for an idea. The last part of the program brings the greatest departures from the group's earlier releases, with a Scriabinesque original composition by Ryan Brown, a lengthy solo interlude by Gregory Brown on excerpts from Schumann's Kinderszenen, Op. 15 (certainly appropriate to the theme here), and finally an improvisation by Desirae Brown's six-year-old child. This is perhaps a bit much, but listeners should make up their own minds. At any rate, it is good to have The 5 Browns back in top form. ~ James Manheim, Rovi
