This Minor Music CD matches three talented young Germans (trumpeter Till Bronner, Gregoire Peterson on alto and baritone and pianist Frank Chastenier) with veteran bassist Ray Brown and drummer Jeff Hamilton. Although there might be a fictional "generation gap" between the Americans and the Germans, Brown and Hamilton certainly do not have to stretch much to play with the hard-bop-oriented frontline. In fact, when Till Bronner uses one of his mutes, he could almost pass for a swing stylist. Frank Chastenier sometimes hints a little at Oscar Peterson and Gene Harris (other times he plays more modern) while Gregoire Peters shows the influence of Jackie McLean and Pepper Adams on alto and baritone, although his piccolo playing on "Piccolo Blues" has no obvious predecessor. This well-rounded set includes standards and a few originals, of which the heated "Ku' Damm 1:30 A.M." (which uses the main chord sequence of "King Porter Stomp") and the heated "Why Change" are the most memorable. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi
